Despite the fabulous teas that we grow— India, after all, is the world’s largest producer and exporter of tea in the world—it is shocking to come across such poorly prepared cuppas in most homes. Thanks to my work with a (high society type) magazine, I have been visiting some of the poshest (and costliest) homes in the country these days.

A couple of miles down from Mussoorie, the now rather fraying “queen of the hills” in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas, is the tiny hamlet of Jharipani. It’s a quaint name, possibly after some of the streams and waterfalls that come trickling down pleasantly from the higher reaches.

This summer, there is a curious phenomenon at work at all the popular holiday destinations within India. While travelers from abroad are not coming in at all and hotels have therefore really been forced to cut down on their prices, this very fact has encouraged middle-class Indians to take to traveling with a vengeance.

International Herald Tribune’s legendary fashion editor Suzy Menkes was in New Delhi recently to conduct the IHT conference on sustainable luxury. I met her and was pleasantly surprised by how much she knew about the country. Menkes has apparently been always fascinated by India and has travelled throughout the country.
