CIVIC, the controlling body for Champagne, holds an annual promotional event in the country whereby a handful of food and lifestyle journalists are invited to experience champagne in a variety of settings. With India being an important destination for its future and the French body keen, no doubt, to tap into the growing middle class market in the country, there is quite an attempt to pitch champagne not just as a celebration drink—as it is usually perceived the world over.

The determined onslaught by foreign hospitality chains into the Indian market means that the industry is currently abuzz with who is moving where. Amongst the biggest players to have entered Delhi this year is the Hilton—the US-based brand founded by Conrad Hilton (whose great granddaughter Paris Hilton is someone you may be more familiar with) and it is in news not just because of the famous surname but because of the unlikely location it has chosen for itself: Janakpuri.

When The Great Kebab Factory (TGKF) opened up at the Radisson, New Delhi, more than a decade ago, it was an instant best-seller. The concept was so simple that you wondered why it hadn’t been executed before – an unlimited buffet of kebabs, no doubt refined from their pop origins but everyone’s favourite finger food nevertheless, served up in air-conditioned comfort (and luxury, because at that time, eating out in a five-star restaurant was undoubtedly that).
My Visit to the Champagne Country
Sitting in an enchanted European castle (this one complete with a moat and turrets) on top of a hill, going through a champagne lunch, minding the fish fork from the fowl, etiquette that a French meal necessitates, is the culmination of one morning’s hard labour.
